of other Colonies. As the supervising Staff is a small
one in Hong Kong, though the Colony is an important one
and the Auditor is in Class I of the Service, I have not
proposed that the second man there should have the status
and emoluments appropriate to a Deputy Auditor.
I do,
however, consider that he should have the status and
emoluments appropriate to a Senior Assistant Auditor in
Class III and be an officer selected by promotion to that
post and not merely the person who happens to be the
senior of the three Assistant Auditors stationed in
that Colony. The increase in the maximum salaries of
the two Assistant Auditors Class IV) to £820 plus
Local Allowance of £50 (or $840) will bring their real
emoluments more into line with those of Assistant
Auditors in West Africa and so facilitate transfers.
