have been in Class IV of the Colonial Audit Department;

but in practice the holders of the higher grade posts

have been graded personally in Class III by virtue not

of their office but of their length of service in the

Colonial Audit Department.

The present general revision of Hong Kong

salaries appears to afford a convenient opportunity to

bring the Hong Kong Audit Posts more into line with the

general scheme of the Colonial Audit Department.

therefore strongly recommend that the following

establishment should be approved temporarily instead of

that contemplated by the Hong Kong Government :-

1 Auditor

£1,350 with free quarters

reckoned at £150 a year for pension.

Two Senior Assistant Auditors on £800 £30

-

£920

with local allowance at the rate of

£50 (or $840) a year rising to £100

(or $1,680) after one year on £920

salary.

One Assistant Auditor on £460, £460, £520, £570 £25

£670, £700, with local allowance of

£50 (or $840) a year from £520

inclusive.

7. If this is agreed to, then I recommend that

when a vacancy occurs in the Senior Assistant Auditor

grade, the number of Senior Assistant Auditors should be

reduced to one, the number of Assistant Auditors being

then fixed at two, which would give a more suitable

organisation for the Department as well as produce an

economy. In that case, the pay of the one Senior

Assistant
