Owing to the present need to retrench public

expenditure in the Colony it has been necessary to impose

a temporary levy on the salaries of officers in the Hong

Kong Government Service with effect from the 1st January,

1936.

Salaries expressed in sterling which do not

exceed $240 a year are free of levy.

The graduated rates of levy in other cases on

salaries expressed in sterling are as follows:-

On the first 5240

21.

On the next 2360

570.

On the next £400

71%.

On the next £400

10%.

On the remaining

portion of

salary above £1400

124.

The levy is applied to net salaries after deductions have

been made for contributions to the Hong Kong Widows' and

Orphans' Pension Scheme.

During the first quarter of 1936, sterling

salaries will, for purposes of payment in the Colony, be

s.d.

converted at 1/6 to the dollar, after deducting the levy.

At the end of that period, the rates of levy and method of

conversion will be subject to review.
