As regards the marked passage in Mr. Gent's
minute, we must, I think, assume that the
Governor has already considered the point, which
was definitely put to him in paragraph 2 of
No.2, that Mr. Sollis has shorter Colonial
Service than that of Mr. de Rome, and the
correspondence as a whole
the last sentence of No.6
see in particular
seems clearly to
indicate that the choice now lies between
Mr. Sollis, as the best Colonial candidate, and
a home man if one of the right type can be
found for the money. As between these my
preference definitely is for Mr. Sollis on the
grounds which I have stated above.
