The position is difficult as the Government
has now accepted the suggestion, made by the Sec-
retary of State in no.2 on 53702 below, that Mr.
Sollis should be appointed if the Governor,
after considering the arguments in favour of a
home candidate, still prefers a man already in
the Colonial Education Service. Evidently the
Governor has not been impressed by the arguments
for a home man.
But as I was no party to the sending of no.
2. I support most cordially Mr. Gent's minute
and adhere to the views expressed in my previous
minute on this subject. The recent report of
the Advisory Committee on Education sub-committee
strengthens, I think, the arguments for a first
class man with home experience.
I recommend, therefore, reference of the
vacancy to Appointments, who will no doubt con-
sider the desirability of consulting the Board
of Education, though they have, no doubt, other
fields of enquiry.
I presume that in regard to prospects, the
Secretary of State will adhere to what he has
