Practically all the organizations that have come

under unfavourable notice and from which the withdrawal

of British protection has been mooted are private companies.

A search in the files of the company registry would show

many such companies containing little or no British

capital, but the following are some that have had to be

referred to the Embassy during recent years on secount of

their undesirable activities. Those marked with an

asterisk have alreedy been deprived of British diplomatic

protection, while remaining under British jurisdiction.

8. The shareholding of private companies is already

restricted by law, The number of membera is limited to

fifty, apart from employees of the company, and no

invitation to subscribe for shares and debentures may be

issued to the public. It would therefore be perfectly

feasible, and in my opinion highly desirable, to insist

that at least a mejority of the shareholders and the greater part of the capital of private companies operating
