Sir,
I have the honour to refer to Foreign
Office despatch No. 611 (F4146/501/10) of
August 30th 1934 in which consideration was
once again paid to the generation old sub-
jeet of the anomalous situation that arises
in connection with British registered but
actually foreign companies which are under
British protection. It was pointed out in
this despatch that the difficulties and dis-
advantages arising in China out of the exist- ing systems were fully realised in the Depart-
ment and that a simple remedy for these could
no doubt be provided by ruling that only com-
panies which were really British should be
regarded as British for the purpose of the
exercise of jurisdiction and protection, but
that unfortunately every attempt which had
been made to achieve this result had broken
