sir,
I have the honour to refer for Your
Excellency's instructions an application which
I have received for registration under the
Kerchant Shipping act of a launch owned by a
company composed of Chineae but incorporated in
Singapore. The case in itself is of no great
importance but it involves questions of principle
relating to our local company legislation and the
protection to be accorded to these Chinese British
companies.
2. The application is contained in the en-
alosed letter from the verses Chinese Banking
Corporation Limited. This company was incorporated in Singapore on the 31st October 1932. It opened
a branch office in China in 1933 and was registered here under Articles 216-221 or the 1925 Order in
Council. On the instructions of the Eecretary of
State ita certificate was endorsed with the state-
ment that British protection would not be accorded
to it in China.
