Bo
I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of
Mr. J.H. Thomas' Straits Settlements Despatch No.
156
of the 29th April, 1936, forwarding a copy of a Despatch
from His Majesty's Ambassador at Peking on the subject
of Company legislation in China.
2.
So far as I am aware, there are no China
Of
companies, incorporated locally, whose headquarters and
seat of control are situated in China. There are however
a considerable number of important China Companies incor-
porated in the Straits Settlements, which carry on business
in China, and whose headquarters are in the Colony.
the greater number, and certainly of the more important
of these companies, both the directors and members are
mainly Straits-born Chinese who are recognised here as
British subjects, though they may also be claimed as
Chinese subjects by the Chinese Government. We are con-
cerned with the manner in which the Ambassador's proposals
may affect this latter type of Public Company, and his
proposals may, I think, be summarized conveniently as
follows :-
(a) No Company incorporated in the Straits
Settlements which carries on business in
China
The Right Honourable
W.G.A. Ormsby-Gore, P.C., M.P.,
etc.,
etc.,
etc.,
COLONIAL OFFICE.
