Results achieved.

The standard of efficiency of the Officers is most satisfactory, as was shown by the annual examinations held in December 1935 and January 1936.

Great progress has been made by the Chinese ratings, who are now able to form an efficient mine sweeping personnel. Their general knowledge of seamanship is fair. An inter-watch boat pulling competition held in August showed their ability to handle Service whalers efficiently. Their bearing at the various parades which they attended showed them to be keen and smart. The credit for this progress is entirely due to the unfailing patience and tact of Mr. F.J. Woodward, Commissioned Gunner, Royal Navy, and Francis H. Kelland, Petty Officer, Gunner's Mate, Official Number D/J.30116, both of H.M.S. "Tamar".

It is intended to institute examinations of ratings for the rate of Petty Officer, to promote keenness and efficiency. Parades, etc.

The Force was represented during 1935 at the Jubilee Review at Happy Valley, in the March-past on His Late Majesty's Birthday, and in the Armistice Day ceremonies.

I inspected the Force shortly after I relieved Commodore Elliott, in April 1935, and Admiral Sir Frederic C. Dreyer, KC.B., C.B.E., inspected and addressed the Force before relinquishing command of the Station.

Combined Operations, 1936.

All Officers of the Force took part in the Combined Operations which were carried out on the nights of the 21st and 22nd March, and, for the first time, Naval Volunteer Force Officers were in command of patrol craft. They carried out their
