RAILWAY OPERATING DETACHMENT CADRE.
Officer Commanding Major R. D. Waller, M.C.
The Railway Operating Dotachment was commenced on two
occasions during the year with movoments of a military nature. one
affecting the Hong kong Volunteer Defence Corps, and the other
the Regular Forces.
Tho Detachment co-operated in the annual Camp of the Corps
to the extent of providing special trains in those cases where the
numbors in Camp warranted it, thus enabling the personnel to gain
oxperience in the entraining of troops and to familiarize the
members of the Corps with the methods associated with the movement
of troops by rail. Special trains were run on November 24th and
December 8th.
The experience proved to be of value. On the 24th November
there was a certain amount of uncertainty on the part of various
units as to which coaches they should occupy, but on December 8th
whon increased numbers wore convoyed, the entraining was carried
out without hitch of any kind.
The original intention of tho kilitury Authorities that
the Railway Operating Detachment should participate actively in an
exercise over the week-end December 6th was not proceedol with, and
as an alternativo a written exercise relating to troop movements
was submitted and forwarded to Houd quurtors, China Command, on
Docember 10th, a copy being sent to the adjutant, H.k.V.D.C. on the
same date.
