I have the honour to request your
approval in accordance with Colonial Regulation
265 to the expenditure of $19,000 under Head
26, Kowloon-Canton Railway, Sub-head 37, Special
Expenditure, of the Estimates for 1937.

The sum of $25,000 was provided under
this sub-head in the approved Estimates for the
reconditioning and conversion from saturated to
superheated steam of one Class B. locomotive
boiler. When a second boiler of this class was
stripped for inspection early this year, serious
faults were discovered, and, in view of the fact
that the total number of such boilers is only
four, it was essential that repairs be carried
out at once.

In the circumstances it is considered
advisable to forego the reconditioning and conversion
to superheat of the one boiler provided for in
the Estimates and to order from home two new
copper fireboxes at a cost of approximately
$14,500, and the reconditioning, fitting and
