Sir,

25

Letter from C-in-C of 12/

11/1935.

With reference to my despatch No.485 of

the 28th March, transmitting a copy of a memoran-

tum from the Wai Chiao Pu in which were set out

the regulations under which the Chinese Maritime

Customs preventive vessels would assist in the

suppression of piracy, I have the honour to report

that I was subsequently informed by the Commander-

in-Chief, the China Station, that he had reason to

believe that Sir Frederick Maze the Inspector Gen-

eral of the Chinese Customs held different views

from the Wai Chiao Pu as to the extent to which the

Chinese Maritime Customs would be prepared to coop-

orate in this matter.

2.

In reply to enquiries made by His Majesty's

Consul-General at Shanghai, at my request, with a

view to clarifying the position, Sir Frederick Maze

expressed a cautious and somewhat indefinite willing-

ness to cooperate with the British Navy "as may be

feasible in the circumstanceB”. In informing Sir

The Right Honourable

Bir Samuel Hoare, 0.C.S.I.,G.B.E., C.M.G.,

etc.,

etc.,

etc.,

/Frederic.
