Correspondence between London and Shanghai offices of Vesers. Butterfield and Swire
Chapter on anti-piracy precautions
sir,
With reference to my despatch No. 506 or the
21 at December last I have the honour to enclose
herewith copies of correspondence between the
London and Shanghai offices of Messrs. Butterfield
and swire regarding the anti-piracy precautions
now being adopted by the company for the protection
of their vessels plying on the China coast,
2.
These safety measures include structural
changes in the ships, provision of bells and other
appliances for sounding alarms, the better armament
of guarda, the searching of passengers, the improve-
ment of the guarantee system and the appointment
of a committee of supervision and investigation.
I also enclose a copy of the new chapter on anti-
piracy precautions which has been added to the
company's "Fleet General Instructions".
3. It will, I think, be seen from these
documents that Messrs. Butterfield and Swire are
now dealing with the piracy question on sensible
and serious lines and are spending a good deal of
money in their efforts to prevent piratical attacks
on their vessels.
His Majesty's ambassador,
British Embassy,
PEKING.
I have the honour to be,
sir,
Your Excellency's most
obedient, humble servant
(sa) J.F. Brenan,
Consul-General.
