considered should be placed upon commercial Banks to the
Committee on the 11th April, 1934. We then requested the
Sub-Committee to prepare a report on the application of
their recommendations to Co-operative Societies operating as
Banks and on the Second Part of our terms of reference,
namely the revision of the Banking Ordinances, 1921/1922 and
the Credit Banks Ordinances, 1920/1922. The Sub-Committee
held two further meetings for this purpose on the 17th and
23rd of April, 1934. Mr. Lowick, the Registrar of
Co-operative Societies, furnished the Sub-Committee with
his views at the meeting of the 17th April, and Mr. C.D.
Harvey, Inspector of Credit Banks, attended the meeting of
the 23rd April.
7. At the request of the Sub-Committee the Chairman
took evidence from the following Co-operative Societies on
the 24th and 25th of April, 1934, with a view to obtaining
independent evidence on the subject:-
Halvaa Vehisachon Co-operative Society, Jerusalem.
Halvaa Vehisachon Co-operative Society, Tel-Aviv.
The Bank Ashrai Co-operative Society, Tel-Aviv.
The Bank Kupat Am Co-operative Society Ltd.,
Tel-Aviv.
The representatives were questioned on the basis
of the original Questionnaire mentioned above and a
supplementary questionnaire prepared by Mr. Hoofien which
together with a summary of their replies are appended to
the original questionnaire.
SITUATION OF LOCAL BANKS.
8. The number of Banks incorporated in Palestine at
the present day is 83 of which 9 are foreign Banks, as
shown in the attached Schedule.
