recruits being chiefly from the Chinese "boys" of the vessels

attached to the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.

In November the annual examination was held by

means of written paper and viva voce. Papers were set by the

Commanding Officer and the Officer Instructor whilst the oral

examination was conducted by Commander R.S. Lovatt, R.N. The

following standard was called for :- 75% to qualify for promotion

and 50% to qualify as efficient. As a result, the following

names were submitted to His Excellency the Governor for promotion

to the rank of Probationary Sub-Lieutenant:-

R.P. Edwards.

R.J.D.C. Grieve

L.J.F. Griffiths

D.G. McAvoy

E.J. Speirs

G.H. Gandy

J.C.M. Grenham

A.J.M. Hazeland

L.D. Kilbee

L.J. Stevenson

R.J. Vernall

And the promotions were duly made with effect from 29th November

and 17 December, 1934.

The Force was represented for the first time by a

detachment at the parade in honour of His Majesty King George V

on 3rd June.

On 11th November, the Armistice Day parade was attended by

both Cadets and Ratings, the latter proceeding to the Pai Lau at

the entrance to the Botanical Gardens.

His Excellency the Governor was graciously pleased to

visit the Force in their ship and view members at exercise on

24th July, 1934, whilst His Excellency Admiral Sir F. Dreyer,

K.C.B., C.B. E. again inspected the Force on 15th January, 1935.

Funds for the Force were set out in 1934 as a sub-

head of Head 27 "Defence" in a sum of $30,000.00. By the end of

the year $29,892.56 had been expended.

From the above provision, the Drill Ship was supplied

with a small 21 3 K.W. lighting set which was later re-inforced

by a larger 71⁄2 9 K.W. set. The vessel was docked at the Hong
