Testimonial
from Officer i/e Transport 25 Jan.1935.
My dear Burlingham,
May I bring to your notice the case of a British
Indian named Benares Khan, concerning whom I have received
your Memoranda Nos.C.I.D.1541/28 of June 29th and C.I.D.
1541/28 of July 10th respectively? This man, who is now
in Canton, requests that his case may be reviewed and the
Expulsion Order made against him revoked, on the grounds
that, being illiterate, he was under the impression that
the receipt given him at this Consulate-General for his
deposit of $100.00 entitled him to proceed to Hong Kong
and that no further papers were necessary. His guarantor
in Hong Kong, Firdos Khan, No.7 Hart Avenue, Kowloon, hus
now written a letter dated July 13th (of which copy is
enclosed) guaranteeing him employment in the Colony.
The man appears to be of respectable character,
and I have on my files the original of a testimonial (of
which a copy is enclosed) given to him by the Officer 1/c
Transport, Hong Kong, on January 25th 1935, certifying
that he performed his duties as night watchman satisfact-
orily from October 1933 to January this year.
The case seems to me, frankly, a very hard one,
and I write to ask you to be so good as to have it
reconsidered, and, if possible, for facilities to be given
to Benares Khan to enter Hong Kong.
