to be allocated to the operation of berthing and correspondingly reduce the risk of heavy collision between vessel and berth.
8. In view of the damage that has occurred, the remedial measures that are being taken at the Jubilee Street landing by placing concrete caissons at the required positions to resist the force of the impact of the ferry vessels, should be satisfactory in so far as the main structure of the landing is concerned. These measures should, in my opinion, be carried to their designed completion by placing the proposed
caisson in extension of the western arm and filling in the
area behind caissons Nos. 7, 6, and 8 with rubble. By these
means, the very heavy renewal charges on the reinforced
concrete work of the landing, which would otherwise ultimately
have to be incurred, can be avoided and further movement in the gantry foundations prevented.
9.
The original fendering which in my opinion, as indicated above, should have proved sufficient in normal circumstances, has been replaced by a still stronger type. This latter fendering is found, however, not to be entirely
adequate. With a continuance of the present conditions of
docking, more or less appreciable renewal and maintenance
expense on the fendering at both landings must be apprehended.
In view of the foregoing, my conclusions may be
briefly stated as follows:-
10.
(a) That the lay-out of the Jubilee Street and Jordan
Road landings have been well devised;
(b) That there should not be undue difficulties in
navigating the ferry vessels to and from these two landings
for those experienced in the service;
(c) That the original designs of the main structures and
fendering of the landings should, in normal circumstances,
have proved satisfactory;
