Sir,

With reference to my despatch No. 82 of the

14th June I have the honour to transmit herewith a

copy of a letter which I have received from the Manager

of the local branch of Messrs. Butterfield and Swire

informing me that the incident in which their steamer,

the S.S. "Fatshan", was involved has now been settled.

2. The settlement cannot be considered altogether

a satisfactory one, inasmuch as Messrs. Butterfield and

Swire, admittedly an innocent party to the dispute, were

called upon to pay $300.00 local currency to cover the

medical fee and other expenses of the member of the

Lightermen's Guild who suffered minor injuries at the

hands of a member of the Seamen's Union. The suggestion

that this payment should be made came from the Provincial

Tangpu, whose intervention was invoked by the Seamen's

Union and the Lightermen's Guild. Messrs. Butterfield and

Swire elected to adopt the suggestion lest worse should

befall.

3. The injuries inflicted on the lighterman by

His Excellency

The Hon. Sir Alexander M.G. Cadogan, K.C.M.G., C.B.

His Majesty's Ambassador,

British Embassy,

Peking.
