Your letter of July 1st (16/15/36)
regarding alas-exports to China reached me as
I was about to write to you on the same subject.
You will remember that on March 14th
last we asked the French Ambassador whether his
Goverment would support action taken by us in
Herne and Brussels regarding the control over
the export of arms to China. On Kay Büth the
French Embassy here informed us orally that the
replies they had received from the Belgian and
Swiss Governments were not helpful. Te told
them that the reply to us from the Swiss Qoverament
(your despatch No. 137 (16/9/35) of May 6th) seemed
to us rather hopeful, but the formal French reply,
of which I now enclose a copy, shows that the French
