61.-28, Miscellaneous Services:-9, Imperial Economic, Imperial Shipping and Imperial Agricultural Bureau

No sum was provided for this service in 1934 from which year the support requested by the Secretary of State and approved in the Budget for 1935, was required. In January 1935 the Crown Agents paid $2.926.83 being the 1934 contribution at the rate of exchange then prevailing and in May 1935 $2,138.09 being the 1935 contribution, a total of $5,064.92. A vote of $1,315 being the difference between the amounts provided and spent in 1935 is accordingly required.

Provision was made in the Estimates for 1934 to construct Caretakers Quarters at the Repulse Bay and Stanley Bathing Beaches at an estimated cost of $6,800. Owing to unavoidable delay, however, the work was not completed in that year and a balance of $1,726 remained unspent.

A supplementary vote for $1,500 is now required to meet the cost of the work completed in 1935.

The above is to be met from savings under Head 33-Public Works Recurrent (1935 Estimates page 100 sub-head 7 item 5).

(C.S.O. 21 in 173/35).

* 63.-104, Harbour Department:-Training Expenses of Assistant Government Marine Surveyors in England

$

Owing to extra training required by Mr. W. SPRAGUE Assistant Government Marine Surveyor whilst on leave and to the training of Mr. D. KoSSICK, a newly appointed Assistant Surveyor for which no provi- sion was made in the Estimates for 1935, a supplementary vote for $1,256 is requested.

The above is to be met from savings under Head 10, Sub-head 23 (1935 Estimates page 28).

(C.S.O. 13 in 5048A/29).

64.-34, Public Works Extraordinary: --New Kowloon. Miscellaneous. 71,--Kowloon Tsai Development.......

Provision made in Estimates (page 105 sub-head 71) $ 30,000

The estimated total cost of the work is $403,000, and a first contract was signed in March, 1933, under which the sum of $136,000 had been expended up to 31st December, 1934. At the time the Estimates for 1935 were prepared it was considered that the sum provided would prove sufficient to complete the first stage, and to make a large area of building land available for sale; further expenditure estimated at $44,000 for fill- ing and drainage work will be necessary before the demand for land in this area can be met.

This further reclamation is also partly necessary for sanitary reasons in order that certain low lying areas forming breeding-places for mosquitoes may be raised to the same level as the surrounding ground.

A part only of the extended work can be completed this year and a supplementary vote for $24,000 is therefore required.

Provision will be made in next year's Estimates for the balance of $20,000

(C.S.O. 7 in 468/33).
