In 1928 Mr. Dawson, an Air Ministry

expert, visited Hong Kong and examined the

work done and the plans for the completion

of the scheme. Among his recommendations

extra was the additioned at a net additional cost of

$230,000 of an area to the north of the

aerodrome in order to give an adequate north-

south runway, and the addition of a triangular

area at the eastern end of the aerodrome on

which the Hong Kong Government had expended

a considerable sum with a view to the erection

of a new gaol. The Director of Public Works

area

had not included either in his original plan

but had made provision for flight gaps costing

$20,000 to mitigate the disadvantage of the

comparatively short north-south runway.
