the Canton-Hankow Railway and other Chinese lines, and goods
wagons are railed through from interior points to the docks
at Kowloon. The Canton terminus is 3 miles from the centre
of the city whereas the steamboats berth is at the central
bund. Normally the British Section does not pay so far as
domestic traffic is concerned. It happens to do so at the
moment because a gambling casino has been set up just across
the frontier which attracts Hong Kong visitors in large
numbers and will no doubt continue to stimulate passenger
receipts so long as the Chinese Authorities permit its
existence.
It was expected that the principal objective
of the Chinese delegates at the conference would be to secure
a proportion of the through terminal fares based on mileage.
When the joint conference met on July 12th the Chinese
delegates made this clear. The 3 delegates nominated by the
Bureau of Railways, Nanking, were:-
