In reply to Your Excellency's despatch No. 16 of the 18th March, I have the honour to inform you that upon receipt of a copy of a letter written by kr. 1. . Stratton, M ngineer-in-Chief of the Chinese section of the Canton-Kowloon kailway to the wanaging Director on the 27th Februɛry regarding preparations being made by the Awangtung Military Authorities to utilise the railway bridges over the seat kiver at Bheklung. I took ngineer-in-Chief steps at a private dinner given to me by the Chairman

him in the presence of kr. Li Luk Chao, the Kanaging Director, who seemed very pleased at my doing so. I pointed out to Mr. Lin Yunkoy the serious state of affairs which might arise and he promised to speak at once to Marzhal. Chen Chi T'ang with a view to pressure being brought to bear upon the General Officer Commanding the East River district so as to guard against any interference with railway property.
