Enclosure 1 in Canton despatch to Peking No. 76 of 25th March, 1935

No. 16.

sir,

Government House,

HONG KONO.

15th March, 1936.

I have the honour to inform you that I have learned

from the Manager of the Kowloon-Canton Railway that prepara-

tions are being made by the Canton Military Authorities to

石 龍 utilize the railway bridges over the Fast aiver at Shek Lung

柬 莞 増 in order to join up the highways of the Tung wun and Tsang

Shing districts.

It is stated that an earthwork rump is being

constructed and that it is the intention to lay planks on

the bridges to enable buses to croes from one system to the

other. The work is being carried out by the Engineering

Corps of the Third Army.

Apart from the serious delay

If this report is well founded I shall be glad ir

you will lodge a protest with the Canton Authorities on

behalf of this Government.

which will occur if the bridges are used both for rail and

for road traffic the proposal is one which violates important

principles of public safety, and i coneider that it should

be strongly resisted.

This government would raise no objection to the

construction of a roadway upon cantilevers projecting from

the railway bride if that structure is strong enough for

the purpose, but considers that in no circumstances should

planking of the present bridge for road traffic be permitted.

I have the honour to be,

ir,

Your most obedient servant,

(Si,ned) #. Peel

His Britannic Majesty's Consul-General,

CAIT N.

Governor ác.
