Certain proposals (of Sir George Maxwell's)
which are to be considered by a Commission appointed
by the Governor of Hong Kong.
1.
An amendment of the law to provide in Hong
the food Kong (as it does in the Straits Settlements) that a
girl acquired under the customary mui tsai system
shall cease to be a mui-tsai on attaining the age
of 18.
2.
(Under the existing law in Hong Kong she is
removed from the register of mui-tsai on marriage
or on choosing to become an ordinary domestic
servant of her present mistress).
An amendment of the law to enable a mui tsai's
relatives or friends (as well as her parents) to
apply to the Government for an enquiry into the
circumstances of her employment and to demand
suitable relief for her.
(The existing law is claimed to give all the
protection necessary in the girl's interests and
a specific amendment as suggested may be
unwise).
3.
The adequacy of the minimum scale of wages
which by law employers are required to pay mui tsai.

4. The relaxation of the law o as to permit bona
to
fide travellers/bring mui tsai with them in transit
through the Colony or for a strictly temporary
sojourn.
5.
The inclusion of boys as well as girls under
the protective legislation relating to mui tsai.
