MUI Tsai,

Certain proposals (of Sir George Maxwell's)

which are to be considered by a Commission appointed

by the Governor of Hong Kong.

1.

An amendment of the law to provide in Hong

the food Kong (as it does in the Straits Settlements) that a

girl acquired under the customary mui tsai system

shall cease to be a mui-tsai on attaining the age

of 18.

2.

(Under the existing law in Hong Kong she is

removed from the register of mui-tsai on marriage

or on choosing to become an ordinary domestic

servant of her present mistress).

An amendment of the law to enable a mui tsai's

relatives or friends (as well as her parents) to

apply to the Government for an enquiry into the

circumstances of her employment and to demand

suitable relief for her.

(The existing law is claimed to give all the

protection necessary in the girl's interests and

a specific amendment as suggested may be

unwise).

3.

The adequacy of the minimum scale of wages

which by law employers are required to pay mui tsai.

F

4. The relaxation of the law o as to permit bona

to

fide travellers/bring mui tsai with them in transit

through the Colony or for a strictly temporary

sojourn.

5.

The inclusion of boys as well as girls under

the protective legislation relating to mui tsai.
