we took this side.

On that left hand side there is a pipe

running along the nullah side and projecting from it about

3 feet from the floor of the nullah. I had to use this as

the water was swollen. I was running my hand along the

pipe walking along the side. I had gone about 250 yards

when I ran into a man whom I now know to be deft. The tunnel

is completely dark except for 3 gratings which let the light

in one in the Naval Yard is the biggest of the three. I

am quite familiar with the tunnel. It was between this

point and this (shows on Ex.I) that we found the Chinese.

He was standing close against the wall facing outwards. When

I felt the man and could see who he was I asked him what he

was doing down there and how he got down there. I put my

face low down and got his face in line with the light from

a grating and I could see the outline of his face. apart

from this no one could be seen.

I heard MacCarthy call out. I saw

two people coming down the nullah - there was a grating and

light from the opening of the tunnel. One had an electric

torch. They came up and gave us assistance.

We caught hold

of the man and at the suggestion of Sergt. Gaywood turned

him on to his stomach and carried him frog fashion. I held

his left leg. Lenton was the fourth man. Accused repeatedly

struggled. We got him to the opening of the tunnel and then

he went limp. He was then hauled up out of the nullah by a

rope. I then saw fte. Burgess apply artificial respiration.

X X. Lim. When I first saw the Deft. in the tunnel I had

a look. I could not say if he looked tired. He was standing

with his back against the wall. I spoke to him in pidgin

English. He bit my hand when I seized him by the shoulder.
