I again lost my footing and was carried down, carrying the girl. We were carried down to the first window in the roof.

There I got to my feet and carried her out on the dry edge of the nullah.

I then saw two people being washed down by the water.

They knocked against my foot.

The little girl called out "my brother".

I couldn't see if they were adults or children.

I was looking after the girl.

I am sure there were two persons.

I put the girl down on the dry edge in the tunnel and went down to look for the boy.

I went past the second window but it got too dark for me to go further.

I went down on left hand side and returned on the same side. When I came to mouth of the tunnel, I saw a civilian and a corporal taking the girl out. (Giles identified in Court). I think I saw two men under the bridge when I looked over the nullah.

I can't say what they were doing.

My attention was concentrated on the girl.

On 22nd June I was going from Queen's Road by Murray Path. About 40 or 50 yards up Path about 30 yards from entrance to tunnel I saw crowd.

I lookedinto nullah and saw body of European girl being washed over a step under the bridge.

I jumped into the nullah and the water knocked me down.

Mary Pine was on me.

Just then a N.A.A.F.I. boy and a Rurope an boy were on me on my right side.

I was describing a Y and all of us were being washed down.

I tried to lie across the nullah in an attempt to save the children.

I got across the nullah at right angles but in a few seconds there was another bump.

Immediately before that Michael was washed over my body and Mary was washed round my feet.

I don't know what happened to the N.A.A.F.I.boy.

The last pump seemed to be a fifth person.

I saw Michael disappear under the tunnel.

I ran down to the tunnel mouth and I saw Mary on her feet with Sergt.Giles.

I assisted her out and handed her to Sergt. Gaywood..

The time was about 3.15.

I fix the time because my watch stopped at 3.20.

Mary Pine was conscious, waving her arms and gasping and murmuring. The boy Michael seemed unconscious.
