On all the evidence I think he was under the influence of drink when I saw him
In my opinion he must have been at or about 3 p.m. slightly intoxicated.
I think he had reached stage where higher brain control was beginning to disappear and he would do things he wouldn't do if he hadn't been under influence.
He was not so drunk as to throw himself over bridge without knowing what he was doing.
Never near that stage .
Amount of alcohol would not have affected his memo ry.
•
He might have shown certain amount of bravado a desire to show off.
He would still be able to distinguish between right and wrong.
He was only patient in prisoners' ward until 27th June.
On 6th July between 7.30 and 7.45 two prisoners escaped.

I went at once to ward and found accused there in bed at 7.50 p.m.
At 7 p.m. he had been in bathroom.
Accused had removed plaster of paris splint.
It extended from thigh te ankle and solidified hard.
He had soaked it off and unwound it.
With the splint on he could walk, but more easily with it off.
With it on he would have a stiff leg.
I had accused under observation from 22nd June to 6th July.
I came to comclusion he was sound in mind.
After he had got over effects of alcohol.

Michael Pine's wounds not equally consistent with having been washed down nullah full of water.
Wound on head more consistent with fall from a height.
A foot of water would break the force of the fall to a certain extent.
It is possible that if he fell into the nullah and were swept against a pillar of No.1 Bridge he might have got fracture. Accused was under influence of alcohol.
I treated him for immersion and treated his injuries.
He was given medicine that night. 3 gr.of calomel and salts next morning.
Dr.Wong was present with me.
I didn't see him give accused a drink of anything.
I think he was only slightly intoxicated that afternoon.
I base that principally on urine content.
I didn't test blood.
Pulse was 126.
Accellerated pulse is symptom of intoxication.
I didn't examine knee jerks.
A very drunk man would show at least 250 mg. per 100 c.c.
If a man had previously passed urine he might have consumed more alcohol.
In a teetotaller amount required would be much less.
Effect of putting a drunken perfon in cold water is to sober him up. Alcohol taken in a concentrated form, drunk quickly on an empty stomach would take effect in as little as twenty minutes.
My first impression was not that he was thoroughly drunk.
He admitted he had been drinking and I decided to verify by urine examination.
I assumed he had been a little more drunk an hour previously. Immersion in Add water encourages the passing of urine.
