advantages of retaining in this country the preferential
Imperial postage rate for first class mail from the
United Kingdom, This would, as indicated above, be
fixed at lid. per 1⁄2 oz. which is the same as the current
rate per initial ounce. The lower weight unit proposed would it is thought suffice for the bulk of postal users
particularly as light weight papers specially designed
for air mail purposes are now on sale,
The annual mail payment in which the scheme
would involve the Ceylon Government would be £11,500 but
it is assumed that this sum would be partly offset by
surcharge payments in respect of air mail of foreign
destination amounting to approximately £500 per annum.
The subsidy contribution which it is hoped that the
Ceylon Government would be prepared to make to the scheme
is £5,000 per annum. This sum has been assessed
especially low in recognition of the fact that connection
by other services would be involved to complete the
journey to Ceylon. It is also relevant to observe that
the Ceylon Government would not incur any liability for
the provision of ground facilities for the trunk services.

destination amount to approximately £500 per annum .
