With reference to your letter of the 9th January last [z] m (13876/33) regarding the sum of £2.2.2. incurred for
funeral expenses in connexion with the burial of J.M. Santos
at Shanghai, I am directed by Secretary Sir John Simon to
transmit to you, to be laid before the Secretary of State
for the Colonies, a copy of a despatch addressed to His
Majesty's Consul-General at Shanghai and of his reply.
2. In the circumstances represented by Sir John Brenan,
I am to request that Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister may be moved
to reconsider the decision communicated in the letter under
reference and to agree to accept the sum of £2.2.2. as
a charge on Colonial Office funds.

With reference to the charge of £2.2.2 which
was included in the accounts of His Lajesty's Consulate-
General at Shanghai for the quarter ended the 30th June
last, in respect of the funeral expenses of J.M. Santos,
a native of Hong Kong, I am directed by Secretary Sir
John Simon to inform you that, in accordance with
kr. Davidson's suggestion, a claim was addressed to the
Colonial office for the repayment of this expenditure.
I am to enclose a copy of the reply received, stating
that no funds are available to meet the charge and
enquiring whether it would be possible to make a further
effort to induce the Shanghai kunicipal Council to
accept the expenditure as a final charge upon their
funds.
As there are no foreign office funds available
from which this expenditure could be paid, I am to
request that you will again approach the Shanghai
Municipal Council as proposed.
If your application is
not successful, I am to suggest that the sum in question
might be recovered from a local charitable institution.
