Importers are however at the present time unwilling to incur
such expense.
Owing to business depression the staffs of the
local business houses have been reduced to such an extent that
employees could not be spared to look after the stalls for
the two weeks during which the exhibition would be open without
serious dislocation of their regular business. It was not
thought likely that the benefit to be derived from the
exhibition either directly or indirectly would be sufficient
to compensate for the loss so sustained.
One firm only considered that they had derived any
benefit from the exhibition held in 1933.
The films approached did not believe that buyers
from the interior of China would be attracted to the exhibition
or even that wholesale Chinese dealers in Hong Kong would
trouble to attend.
7.
In the circumstances the Committee felt that the
support promised was not sufficient to justify them in
proceeding with the scheme, and the Government was so informed
by them in a letter dated 17th April, 1934.
8.
Tentative proposals for the organization of an
exhibition in the autumn of 1935 have since been received from
the representative of a local advertising agency but these
have not yet reached a stage to merit consideration.
9.
I understand that full reports regarding this
matter have been sent to the Department of Overseas Trade
by His Majesty's Trade Commissioner.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient, humble servant,
Governor, &c.
