flushing tanks were kept working continuously and sand deposits, as these accumulated, were removed. Many defective traps, gullies, gratings, etc., were replaced, and a number of old dis- used drains destroyed and filled in. All metal work in connec- tion with the drainage systems was inspected, and, where found necessary, repaired and tarred.

70. Gas Lighting.The total number of street lamps in use at the end of the year, all of which were incandescent, was 556, an increase of 1 over the previous year.
The fitting of Reflectors to the Gas Lamps in Kowloon was undertaken by the Gas Company, without expense to Govern- ment, and resulted in better illumination.

Red and green traffic lights were installed in connexion with the Vehicular Ferry at Jordan Road.

72. Typhoon and Rainstorm Damage. Following typhoons repairs of greater or less importance were carried out t; the following buildings:---Hung Hom Police Station, Signal Hill, Yaumati Pig Market, Royal Observatory and Kowloon Hospital.
Repairs were carried out to the Hung Hom Ferry Pier after the typhoon which occurred in September.

78. Maintenance of Water Works.-A constant supply was isaintained on 172 days during the year, compared with 272 in 1932.
Owing to the protracted dry season and the low rainfall it was necessary to impose the following restrictions:-1st to 24th January, and 28th January to 30th April, 10 hours per diem. (6-11 A.M. and 4-9 P.M.). 1st May to 27th June, 6 hours per diem. (6-9 A.M. and 4.30-7.30 P.M.). 26th August to 12th September, 10 hours per diem.
As the construction of the Yaumati Hill Service Reservoir had not been completed by the end of the year pressures had to be augmented by connections from the 24" trunk main.
A new centrifugal pump, driven by a 12 H.P. Petter Engine, was installed in the Pump House below Pineapple Pass. The pump is capable of delivering 28,000 gallons an hour into the Conduit and easily deals with the dry weather flow of the Shing Mun River at that point.

The total yield of the Shing Mun River as measured by the Recorder and V. Gauge at the Upper intake was 2883.4 million gallons as compared with 4017.86 million gallons last year. addition 98.12 million gallons were obtained from the Needle Hill stream intake. The pumps below Pineapple Pass worked on 228 days during the year and delivered 53.78 million gallons, equiva- lent to 236,000 gallons for each working day. During the year 1782.69 million gallons were delivered from the Shing Mun Valley through the Tunnels into the Reception and Byewash Reservoirs, but a percentage of this quantity could not be stored and ran to waste. The minimum monthly yield was in March when the quantity delivered was 52.50 million gallons.
The total quantity filtered by the Paterson Filtration Plant during the year was 1469.97 million gallons, 396.92 million gallons of which were supplied to Hong Kong.
The total quantity of water supplied during the year was 2051.84 million gallons (excluding 101.49 million gallons supplied to Water Boats at Lai Chi Kok), which gives an average daily consumption of 5.62 million gallons or 18.0 gallons per head based on an estimated population of 316,000. Details are given in Table IX.
The quantity of water stored in the impounding reservoirs on 1st January was 581.67 million gallons and a minimum of 209.48 million gallons was reached on 29th May.
