The Government will decide, having regard to the ground
of termination of appointment, whether the Cadet shall
be sent home at the cost of public funds.
5. The leave and passage regulations at present in
force are set out in sections vii and viii of the
General Orders. a copy of which is enclosed for perusal
and return.
6. Pensions are governed by local legislation.
The normal age of retirement is 55 except in the case of
ill-health.
7. A deduction of 4 per cent is made from the
salaries of all members of the permanent service,
including Cadet Officers as a contribution towards the
provision of pensions for the widows and orphans of
public officers.

The salaries of the Cadet Service of Hong Kong
are at present as follows: but no guarantee whatever
is given that they will remain unaltered.
£450 on appointment
£475 on passing the 2nd examination in Chinese.
£525 on passing the final examination,
and thence by three annual increments of £50, one
increment of £75, one of £100, and eleven further
increments of £50, to £1,400 per annum, with efficiency
bars at £675 and £1,100. Further promotion may be
made by selection to Class I appointments of which there
are at present seven, with salaries of £1,500 rising
to £1,800 by annual increments of £50.
Class I appointments are normally filled by the
appointment of Cadet Officers, but in no case are these
appointments necessarily confined to them. ( The present
