With reference to your
despatch No. 71 of the 1st February,
requesting to be supplied with
copies of any Act
or regulations
in force in Great Britain relating

to the regulation of lifts, I an
etc. to inform you that the Ministry
of Health, to whom reference has been
made in the matter, states that
neither in Great Britain nor in
Northern Ireland is there at present
a national code of practice dealing
with the installation of lifts and
escalators, and that such
installations are not the subject of
legislative control except so far as
they may be dealt with in some towns
under

under local Acts, or in virtue of
Section 36 of the Public Health
Acts Amendment Act, 1890, which
requires every building which is
newly used as a place of public
resort to be constructed and supplied,
to the satisfaction of the Local Authority,
with ample, safe and convenient means
of ingress and egress for the use of
the public.

2.
The Ministry/at the same
time intimated that the Building Industries
National Council are at present drafting
a
a code of practice as/guide and for
voluntary acceptance by engineers, architects,
and manufacturers in the interests of public
safety, although the code will not have the
force of law. The Council have undertaken
to supply copies of the code when ready,
and these will be forwarded to you as soon
as they are received.
