though thus again planned, was also not realised. For when
the two lines are connected, goods imported from Hong Kong
can be sent direct to the North River districts. The passage
through this city would then be but like a moving cloud or
running water and would remain for but a moment. Canton
would then become a place passed by and not stopped at, and
the depression in industry and commerce and shrinkage in
revenue may be certain. Since the building of the Canton-
Kowloon Railway, the desire throughout the three decades and
more for joining rail with the Canton-Hankow line, has not
been brought to realisation and the cause of this may be
traced to the above.

It is now understood that Hong Kong is bringing up
the old issue anew, and is requesting the joining of rail.
The news comes as a bombshell and is fully reported elsewhere.
Besides reports have been received from merchants of various
businesses who greatly oppose this matter. This Chamber of
Commerce, which thinks the proposition to be dangerous, feels
unable to remain silent, The Party and Government leaders
are therefore looked up to to weigh fully the pros and cons
of the proposition and not accede to the request. The general
public are especially asked to raise opposition unanimously,
and to protest strongly on reason so that the trick of joining
rail may not be realised. The whole city will be benefited.
The general situation will be benefited"
