Sub-Enclosure in Canton despatch to Peking No. 93 of 6th July, 1934.

CANTON-KOWLOON RAILWAY ADMINISTRATION

An order transmitting for information the text of a

telegram issued by the City Chamber of Commerce protesting against

the joining of rail between Canton-Kowloon Railway and Yueh-han

Railway.

The following circular telegram, dated the 21st, issued

by the Canton City Chamber of Commerce, has been received:-

"For the past few days, various newspapers in Canton

and Hong Kong reported that the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Hong

Kong, planning the revival of trade in Hong Kong proposes to apply

to the Kwangtung Government for the joining of rail between the

Canton-Kowloon and Canton-Hankow Railways. On reading these

reporta, we are greatly surprised. When the Canton-Kowloon

Railway was first planned, it was intended to join rail with the

Canton-Hankow Line. The chief station of that railway

(the C.K.R) was first fixed at the neighbourhood of Eung Wo Sze,

Tungahan, for the purpose of future linking up. Subsequently.

because the problem of joining rail was obstructive to the

commercial development of Canton, a change was immediately made,

and the Canton chief station was placed at Taishatou, thus

making it clear that there would be no ground for the joining

of rail.

In 1918 a foreign engineer again undertook surveys from

Tungshan, along the back of shiu Pak and the Koonyam Hill to the

Canton-Hankow chief station at Wongsha. The joining of rail,
