GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONG KONG,

Sir,

With reference to your despatch No.345

13

of the 7th September, 1933, on the subject of the class + P34 44/353

of steamer passage for which certain officers of this Government are eligible I have the honour to inform you

that I have considered the question in accordance with

the third paragraph of your despatch.

2.

The number of officers affected by the

change in the rules regarding class of passage amounts

to five only, namely, three Assistant Analysts, one

Assistant Auditor, and the Professional Assistant at

the Royal Observatory. The last is a new appointment on the scale £500 to £800, and the holder joined the

service after the introduction of the new rule; but it

would be difficult to deny him the benefit of any

concession which might be granted to the petitioners.

3.

Nevertheless, although the concessions

now asked for would not in practice involve much addi-

tional expenditure, and although I do not anticipate

similar requests from officers other than those I have

mentioned, I have been brought reluctantly

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

SIR P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER, G.B.E., M.C., M.P.
