MEMORANDUM.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs present
their compliments to His Majesty's Legation and have the
honour to acknowledge receipt of a memorandum dated the
14th August on the subject of the eviction by the Hong Kong
Government of the residents of Kowloon City. The Ministry
however find that there are considerable discrepancies
between the facts as reported to them and the statements
contained in the memorandum under acknowledgment, and has
the honour therefore to submit the following statement:-
The Ministry for Poreign Affairs has received a
petition from the inhabitants of Kowloon City as
follows:
*Since June last when we received the notification
dated the 20th June issued by the New Territories Dis-
trict Office (South District), we have been subjected
to daily threats to the effect that 'unless action were
taken in accordance with the prescribed arrangements,
our houses would be demolished without our consent and
we would be expelled'. We residents, having regard
to the precedent of the oppressive treatment imposed
last year by the Hongkong Government on the residents
of Kowloon Tsui (1), were extremely alarmed.
