The Acting Consul-General, Shanghai,
To H.E. the Governor, Hong Kong.
May 8th, 1933.
Sir,
I have the honour to transmit herewith a
copy of an account which I have received from the
Shanghai Municipal Council for the burial of a
destitute British subject, the late John Maria
dos Santos, on the 5th March last.
2.
The deceased, who was registered at this
Consulate-General as a British subject, was born in
Hong Kong on the 23rd May, 1902, and his father,
Ermilindo Estaulan dos Santos, was also a native
of Hong Kong, having been born there on the 7th May,
1871.
3.
Expenses of this nature are usually defrayed
by local charities, but owing to the deceased being
of Portuguese origin, this course was not possible
on this occasion, as the charity concerned declined
to meet the charge. It has been ascertained that
there is no estate from which the funeral expenses
can be recovered, and accordingly I have the honour
to enquire whether you will accept the expenditure
as a charge on Hong Kong funds.
I have, etc.,
(Signea) J.W.O.DAVIDSON.
Acting Consul-General.
