MR. PHILLIPS said that from the Post Office point
of view there was no objection to the development of a
wireless telephone service between Java and Malaya, but he
thought that the Governor of Malaya ought to be warned
that this development might entail substantial expense and
it was advisable that exhaustive tests were carried out
before this development was embarked upon. He observed
that it was intended to instal a service to subscribers
which was considerably more difficult than a service to a call
box.
As regards the application from the Governor of
Hong Kong, he was only asking for authority to open
negotiations. He suggested that this should be approved,
but that the Governor be asked to report, when negotiations
were entered into, as to the expense which would be involved
and the rates which would be charged, in order that the matter
might be further considered.
MR. VERNON agreed that it would be wise to warn the
Governor of Malaya that the development of a wireless
telephone service between Java and Malaya might prove a
very expensive undertaking.
CONCLUSION.
