Extract from Minutes of Imperial Communications Committee

meeting held 19th July, 1933.

8. WIRELESS SERVICES IN HONG KONG AND MALAYA.

(1.C.C. 1501 and 1511.)

THE COMMITTEE had under consideration copy of a

letter from the Colonial Office to Imperial and International

Communications, Limited, indicating the decision reached

by the Committee that, subject to certain reservations,

Hong Kong and Malaya should be allowed to develop their own

services .C.J.1501); also telegrams from the Governors

of the Straits Settlements and Hong Kong asking permission

to institute certain developments (I.C.C.1511).

MR. VERNON said it would be remembered that this

question had formed the subject of important and protracted

discussions at which the Secretary of State had presided,

when it was finally agreed to allow Hong Kong and Malaya to

drop the idea of transferring their services to the

Communications Company owing to the fact that the proposed

high power station at Hong Kong and Singapore had been

temporarily abandoned. The Colonies were, therefore, given

permission to develop their own services within certain

limitations. The Company had been informed but had raised

no objections. The Governors of both Hong Kong and Malaya

had now telegraphed asking permission to make certain

developments, and in view of the interest of other Departments

the Colonial Office had referred the matter once more to the

Committee. The Colonial Office would like to see these

applications approved. The Governor of the Straits

Settlements asked to develop a wireless telephone service

between Java and Malaya, while the Governor of Hong Kong

desired to institute a wireless telephone service with

Shanghai and Manila.
