recommendation of the Public Works Committee of the Legislative Council which in considering the sketch plans for the bungalow came to the conclusion that the requisite accommodation could not be provided for an all-in cost of less than $120,000. Even so the final estimate including

out-buildings, furniture and garden amounted to $143,126 and accordingly before proceeding further with the scheme

I laid the whole case before the Finance Committee which

agreed unanimously that no further economies were practicable and that the construction of the bungalow at a cost of $143,126 should be approved. I therefore directed that the tender of $84,031 should be accepted and the work put in hand.

It is anticipated that the sum of $50,000.

provided in the Estimates will owing to the delay which has occurred suffice for such work as it will be possible to complete during the current year and in that case the balance of $93,126 will be provided in the budget for 1934. If, however, the work should progress more quickly the Committee has approved of a supplementary vote for the required sum being taken this year.

I trust that these arrangements will meet with

your approval.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient, humble servant,

the

Governor, &c.
