Sir,
COLONIES

LONDON, S.W.1.
RECEIVE 20th October, 1933.
21 OCT1933
C. O. REGY
With reference to your letter No. 13829/33 of the
29th of August, relative to a vacancy for an Assistant
Apothecary, Medical Department, Hong Kong, I have the honour
to state that there are no officers retrenched from the
Colonial Service known to us who possess the requisite
qualifications.
2.
We have therefore considered for the vacancy
candidates, without previous Colonial Service, but of those
whose names are noted by us, only one has expressed a desire
to be considered for the appointment. The candidate referred
to is married and since preference is to be given to
unmarried candidates, before inviting further applications by
advertisement or otherwise, I have to enquire whether on the
grounds of economy the Secretary of State considers it
desirable to request the Government of Hong Kong to consider
the local candidates, i.e. :- Mr. A.R. Inkster care of the
Hankow Dispensary Limited, Hankow, and Miss K.N. Graveson of
22 Conduit Road, Hong Kong, both of whom have applied for the
appointment, and appear to be qualified. In the event of
the engagement of either of these candidates the Government of
Hong Kong would save the cost of the outward passage.
Pending the receipt of further instructions from your
Department or the Government of Hong Kong, we propose to take
no further action with regard to filling the vacancy.
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office,
Downing Street,
S.W.1.
