4, MILLBANK,

LONDON, S.W.1,

Sir,

RECEIVED £ 15 NOV 1933

C. O. REGY

14th November, 1933.

With reference to your letter No. 13799/33 of

the 31st October and previous correspondence, regarding

the selection of candidates to fill two vacancies for

Assistant Government Marine Surveyors (Engineer

Surveyors) in the Government Marine Surveyor's Office,

Hong Kong, I have the honour to state that in view of

the fact that the maximum age limit for candidates for

appointment as Engineer and Ship Surveyor to the Board

of Trade is 40 years, and Commander Hole expressed

preference for men under 35, we considered it desirable

to eliminate from the field of possible candidates all

retrenched Marine Engineers over 40, whose names appear

in the list which accompanied the semi-official letter

from Mr.S.Robinson, (Proms.691 of the 6th July) and

submitted to the Board of Trade the papers of Messrs.

J. Fraser, W.E.G. Wallace and J.F. Dunlop, with the

request that prior consideration should be given to

these candidates, although their qualifications may not

be so good as those of candidates without previous

Colonial experience, but none of them was considered

suitable.

2. We have, therefore, in conjunction with Mr.

W. McAuslan, I.S.O., (Engineer Surveyor-in-Chief, Board

The Under Secretary of State,
