Enclosure 1 in Shanghai P/L despatch to Peking Number 187 of June
23rd, 1933.
90
Sir,
Messrs. Teesdale, Newman and Company, Shanghai, to the Acting Consul--General, Shanghai, June 21st, 1933.
Tseng #u Cho (decd) and Mrs. Ruby Tseng.
With further reference to our letter to you of
the 2nd February and your renly of the 22nd idem, we shall
be much obliged if you will kindly let us have the
information on this matter.
The case is coming up again in the District Court
on Thursday, the 29th instant, and our client is extremely
anxious that some representation be made to the Chinese
authorities, which would strengthen her position considerably
so we are informed. As matters stand at present, we
understand that it is quite possible that, under some
peculiar Chinese law, she is going to be made to hand
over one sixth of her estate to her husband's married
sister, although she has paid duty thereon to the British
Government.
We are, etc.,
(sd.) Teesdale, Newman and Co.
