Copy of letter from the Kailan Mining Administration to the

Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce.

129

8th December, 1932

The Secretary,

Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce.

Dear Sir,

Proposed Foreshore & Sea Bed Works Ordinance of 1932

In connection with the representations which we understand the Chamber is making to Government regarding the above-mentioned proposed Ordinance, we should be obliged if you would include in same a note on our position, as owners of the property known as K.M.L. No. 8.

The property consists of an area of ground used for the storage of coal, together with a wharf at which our own vessels berth when discharging, and at which ocean-going vessels berth when taking bunkers. This wharf, incidentally, is the only one in the Colony, operated by a British Company, at which merchant and naval vessels can berth for the purpose of bunkering.

Should we be at any future date deprived of our marine rights, as might easily happen under the proposed new Ordinance, our property would be of no further value to us, and we should find it extremely difficult if not impossible

The insecurity introduced into our title deeds by the passing of such an Ordinance will, moreover, have a depressing effect on the value of our property, and we trust you will strongly urge upon Government the injustice that will be inflicted upon property owners such as ourselves by the passing of this Ordinance.

Yours faithfully,

THE KAILAN MINING ADMINISTRATION

Copy of Letter from the Hongkong & Kowloon Wharf & Godown Company

Limited to the Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce.

The Secretary,

Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce.

Dear Sir,

9th December, 1932

Proposed Foreshore & Sea Bed Works Ordinance of 1932

With reference to the above-mentioned proposed Ordinance, and your letter of 26 th September, 1932, to Colonial Secretary con- cerning the Draft Bill, we desire to support the Chamber in any protest made to Government against the Bill. This Company was formed in 1886 and has acquired Marine Lot property to the extent of 960,000 square feet in which large sums have been invested by the construction of wharves and godowns. We must, therefore, re- gister a strong protest against the adoption of the Bill in its present form for it is obvious that no compensation could be pro- vided to recompense such a concern as ours, which, under the pro- posed Ordinance, could be abolished.

Yours faithfully,

(Sgd.) F. H. CRAPNELL

Secretary.
