interests and trade. For instance, misgiving is felt
that the Hongkong Government may expropriate some
Chinese wharf owners who are alleged to charge excessive
dues. This, it is feared, would probably lead to
retaliation by the Chinese Government against British
firms in China.
The fears expressed by the China Association, in
our opinion, have real substance and I should be
grateful if you would let me know what the position now
is and whether any further information has been received
from Hongkong.
