Y

Sir,

With reference to your letter of the 7th February

(13725/33) transmitting copy of a despatch from the

Governor of Hong Kong on the subject of smuggling from that colony to Chine se territory, I am directed by the

Board of Trade to state that the question of the

relations between the Hong Kong Government, the Chine se Maritime Customs and the British Shipping Companies

appears to be one which should be adjusted locally

according to the practical needs of the situation. In

this connection the Board are glad to see from paragraph six of the despatch under reference that the matter is

being dealt with on the se lines, and they hope that a

solution will be reached.

Otherwise, the Board are in general agreement with

the views expressed in your letter under reference.

I have the honour to be,

The Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office,

S.W.1.

Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

9.4 Baker
