serious abuse or evasion of th anti-lui Tsai legislation

coul2 escape the notice of its inspectors, and the reports

received here periodically indicate clearly that the law is

being duly enforced.

Vizits paid by specially employed

Government inspectors, two of whom are ladies, have shorn that

in general the girls are contented en well treated by their

employers. Isolated cases of cruelty to children occur in

Hong Kong as in every country, but they are exceptional, and

adequate penalties are provided by the Courts. You will see

from the real which I have enclosed that no case of ill-

treatment of registered Mui Tsɛi was reported in the last

despatch received from the Governor.

I might add that reports are received at regular

intervals from the Governor of Hong Kong upon the conditions

of the girls who were formerly Mui Tsai an generally upon the

administration of the anti-Hui Tsai legislation in the Colony.

Copies of these reports are sent to the House of Commons

Library, where, of course, they are available for consultation.
