serious abuse or evasion of th anti-lui Tsai legislation
coul2 escape the notice of its inspectors, and the reports
received here periodically indicate clearly that the law is
being duly enforced.
Vizits paid by specially employed
Government inspectors, two of whom are ladies, have shorn that
in general the girls are contented en well treated by their
employers. Isolated cases of cruelty to children occur in
Hong Kong as in every country, but they are exceptional, and
adequate penalties are provided by the Courts. You will see
from the real which I have enclosed that no case of ill-
treatment of registered Mui Tsɛi was reported in the last
despatch received from the Governor.
I might add that reports are received at regular
intervals from the Governor of Hong Kong upon the conditions
of the girls who were formerly Mui Tsai an generally upon the
administration of the anti-Hui Tsai legislation in the Colony.
Copies of these reports are sent to the House of Commons
Library, where, of course, they are available for consultation.
